Liverpool waterfront is famous throughout the world. The world's first enclosed commercial dock was built here in 1715 and in 1839 Samuel Cunard was awarded the first British transatlantic steamship mail contract. Both Cunard and White Star shipping lines run regular journeys to New York and Canada creating great wealth reflected in the magnificent architecture.
